My Favorites in the 2012 Knight News ‘Networks’ Challenge

Thursday, March 29, 2012 4:42 pm

With more than 1,000 entries in the first leg of the Knight Foundation’s News Challenge, the contest is overflowing with inspiring ideas. In addition to my two little ideas (here and here), below are some of my favorite proposals. I didn’t read through all of the entries, or even most of them, so I’m sure I missed plenty of gems. In fact, I don’t envy their judges — with the caliber of ideas presented I would find it incredibly difficult to not want to fund everyone (as you can see from this list, I already went over the $5M allocated by the Challenge.)

Some exciting trends this year include: geotagging, community news, international news, maps, trusted sources, radio networks, and collaborative writing tools. I wish everyone who entered the best of luck (including myself, and I certainly need it!) There are only a few hours left in the public voting process — take a moment to look through the entries and discover your own favorites. You never know, maybe something will spark your own amazing idea.
